A spoken word opera in two acts, performed in June 2021 and October 2021 in the Rose Garden in Prospect Park. Narcissus pseudonarcissus is a contemporary retelling of Ovid’s myth of Echo and Narcissus for five voices, two clarinets, and percussion. Ovid’s tale is rearranged to explore communication between individuals and across the human/nature division. The opera’s non-linear structure enters into a contemporary conversation on desire, consent, and control: who owns the body; who owns the land; how do we navigate these relationships and exchanges?
